History & Features of the Park

Originally excavated as part of a project to connect the former Japanese National Railways Takamori Line and Takachiho Line, construction was halted in 1975 when workers struck a massive underground water vein, causing an enormous influx of spring water. After the project was canceled, the site was redeveloped into a public park to showcase its cool structure and abundant water supply.

A Cool, Refreshing Retreat

Out of the total 2,050-meter tunnel, a 550-meter section is open to the public. The temperature inside remains a comfortable 17°C (62.6°F) year-round, making it a natural air-conditioned haven—cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Abundant Spring Water Flow

As you walk along the path inside the tunnel, a clear stream of spring water flows beneath your feet, producing an incredible volume of roughly 32 tons per minute. The deep water source area at the furthest point is preserved and serves as a vital water origin for the local town.
