Hello, fellow hot spring enthusiasts! As an Onsen Sommelier, I am always on the hunt for hot springs that not only relax the body but also offer unique qualities for skin care and wellness. Today, I’d like to introduce you to a hidden gem in Kumamoto Prefecture: Kikuchi Onsen, along with my experience staying at the wonderful Kikuchi Kanko Hotel.
What Makes Kikuchi Onsen Special?
Discovered in 1954, Kikuchi Onsen is renowned throughout Japan as a premier “Bihadano-yu” (Beauty Bath) or “Keshono-yu” (Cosmetic Bath). Here is why hot spring lovers adore this water:
・High Alkalinity for Natural Cleansing
With a pH level between 9.0 and 9.5, the water is distinctly alkaline. Alkaline springs act much like a gentle, natural soap—softening the skin and gently lifting away dead skin cells and excess sebum.
・Rich in Metasilicic Acid (Natural Moisturizer)
Kikuchi Onsen contains a healthy amount of metasilicic acid, a natural compound known for its skin-hydrating properties. After cleansing away dead skin cells, the water locks in moisture, leaving your skin feeling silky-smooth.
・Ideal Spring Temperature
The water emerges naturally from the source at around 45°C (113°F). This perfect temperature means the baths can be enjoyed without unnecessary heating or dilution, preserving the pure mineral quality.
My Stay at Kikuchi Kanko Hotel
During my visit, I stayed at Kikuchi Kanko Hotel, one of the representative ryokan (Japanese inns) in the Kikuchi area.
Hot Spring Profile & Water Quality
・Spring Type: Alkaline Simple Hot Spring (Alkaline Hypotonic High-Temperature Spring)
・Source Temperature: Approx. 48°C (118.4°F)
・pH Level: 9.2–9.4
Because simple thermal springs are mild and gentle on the body, they carry a low risk of “bath fatigue” (over-soaking exhaustion). Combined with high alkalinity, the bath feels exceptionally soft, smooth, and soothing against the skin.
Bathing Highlights
・Spacious Baths & Garden Open-Air Baths
The hotel features large indoor baths surrounded by wide glass windows and serene outdoor baths (rotenburo) set against lush greenery. Soaking in the open air while listening to nature is pure relaxation.
・Onsen Sommelier’s Care Tip
Since alkaline waters cleanse the skin’s outer layer, your skin can lose moisture more quickly after stepping out of the bath. Be sure to stay hydrated and apply your favorite moisturizer or lotion shortly after bathing to lock in the glow!
Final Thoughts
Kikuchi Onsen is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling through Kumamoto who wants to experience authentic Japanese bathing culture and skin-rejuvenating thermal waters.
